The Place

"All first impressions were great.  The town was lovely, the houses were beautiful, I felt very welcome and safe immediately."   Kyle C., Spring Semester 2007

National Geographic described Dingle as " the most beautiful place on earth", If you wish to experience all that Ireland has to offer, the Dingle Peninsula Gaeltacht is where you want to be.  Only here will you find the perfect mix of charm, history and surprise – for it is in this part of Ireland (also known as the Corca Dhuibhne Peninsula) that the Irish language and culture have been officially preserved.  The northernmost of County Kerry's two great peninsulas, Dingle is marked by the beauty of an authentic Ireland frozen-in-time and the spirit of modern people who proudly and joyously revel in tradition.

In the Dingle Peninsula, you'll find Ireland in 3-D: its charming seaports, windswept beaches, breathtaking mountains and megaliths, bustling towns, picture-book pastures, palm-tree lined streets, and endless adventures in every direction – from a visit to a Stone Age burial ground to a trip to a metropolitan museum.  And you'll study within a stunning, neo-Gothic building, brimming with unexpected amenities.

Many refer to the idyllic location of SHU's Center for Irish Cultural Studies as the “best of both worlds” – since it provides visitors with a friendly tourist haven and a world-class educational experience.  And yet, it is much more.  In fact, our students will tell you: it's the best of all possible worlds.  A fairy-tale setting with welcoming locals and immersive activities.  Tremendous Díseart learning resources.  Magnificent relics, ruins and holy places.  Outstanding access to other areas of the country – and to Europe.  And a vast, living record of folklore, devotions, celebrations, history, and authentic music and dance.

As it is often said here, “The Gaeltacht is Ireland at its most Irish.”  There is no place quite like it to engage in Irish studies – anywhere.

"..absolutely loved Dingle. It as exactly the type of town I wanted to stay in while in Ireland"(Amy B., May Intersession 2007)
